Beira lake projects begins, first phase completion will be in 2014

The ministry of Defense and Urban Development announced that the work on the Beira lake project had begun with the first phase scheduled to be completed during the latter part of 2014. This is a US $ 22 million project, one of many coming under the metro Colombo urban Development Project (MCUDP) funded by the world bank will have parks, recreational areas, museum and commercial entities around the Beira lake.

Contract for reinforcing the embankment of the East Beira lake had already been awarded and its work had already begun. Contracts for the other lakes to will be awarded in the coming weeks and construction will begin soon. And further stated that the construction of Linear park and the museum are also to be given soon.

And the 6m x 12 m linear park is to be built around the lake complete with foot bridges, walkways and food outlets. Several water-bus terminal, outdoor stadium, viewing decks and marsh gardens too would be built around the lake. The project would begin with the east lake adding these features to its embankment in the first phase. D.R. Wijewardanemawatha along with the land facing the Galle face green would be allocated for commercial and tourism purposes.
