Delft Island is a famous and growing tourism destination in Northern part of Sri Lanka, the Delft Islands formally known as Nedunthivu by Srilankan which means the largest island in the Northern Region. ( Nedum or Nediya – Large in Tamil and Thivu – island in Tamil) so it is become Nedunthivu,

Nedunthivu was called llha Das Vacas by Portuguese and Delft Island by Dutch later finally it’s become Delft Island in English too.

Journey from Kurikadduwan (KKD) to Delft Island/ Nedunthivu

Kurikadduwan is known as one of the main jetty in Jaffna to go to Nainatheevu (for Nagadeepa Temple or Nagapoosani Amman Temple) and Delft Island. This is formally known as KKD by Naval Community.

 

Kurikadduwan (KKD) to Delft Island/ Nedunthivu ferry Time

There is a single ferry is available by Road Development Authority for Free of Charge the ferry could transport upto 100 Passengers at a time,

Navy also offering a boat if anyone wanted to hire separately, the boat is available for Rs. 6,000.00 Up and down from KKD to Delft Island back to KKD.

Kurikadduwan to Delft Island Morning 9.30 or 10.00 Am
Delft Island to Kurikadduwan Noon 2.30 or 3.00 Pm
Kurikadduwan to Delft Island Evening 6.00 or 6.30 Pm

 

Traveling Time Approximately: 45 Minutes to 1 Hours

And it’s advisable to stay inside the boat rather staying out, when the sea is though and if you are new to boat journey, advisable to takes some shopping Bags in case of vomiting while your journey.

 

Mobile Coverage is Delft Island

All Srilanka Mobile Networks providers offer the Mobile Coverage in Delft Island, and there is no Issues of Loss of Mobile Coverage in the island.

 

Hotels and Accommodation at Delft Island

There are 4 Rooms Hotel opened recently and offers you a very basic accommodation alone with food and drink services near to the jetty points of Delft Island.

And there are less number of shops available for retailing and mostly the bread and buns available for sales those.

 

Vehicle Hiring in Delft Island

It is advisable to hire the vehicles near to jetty points, where all the three wheel drivers are asking the same amount as pre-determine of Rs. 1,500.00 and Dimo Batta Drives are about Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 2,500.00

And they will manage your time to see all the places within the times frame and allow you to see all above 12 places with in time of 10.30 Am to 2.30 Pm.

Therefore those who are traveling it is advisable to come jetty soon as possible, because the priority will given to those who lives in island and later only for tourist upon space available.

    Delft is a peaceful Island & People are very friendly. I visited this Island 05th February 2016 & spent.1 hour &15 minis by boat from Kurikadduwan ferry to Delft ferry by boat.This Island is famous for wild Hoses ,Ponies,Coral Walls & Shallow beaches.There unique fetchers of the beautiful Island.
