Master of Science Degree/Postgraduate Diploma in

  1. Water Resources Engineering and Management (2014/2015)
  2. Water Resources Management (2014/2015)

Full-time / Part-time Courses leading to M.Sc. Degree / P.G. Diploma

Applications are invited for the above courses conducted by the UNESCO Madanjeet Centre for South Asia Water Management (UMCSAWM) established affiliated to the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Moratuwa. The courses scheduled to commence in August 2014 are for both local and international students who wish to obtain a postgraduate degree/diploma in 1) Water Resources Engineering and Management or 2) Water Resources Management. The aim of the course is to provide a specialist training with a firm grounding on the principles, techniques, issues and practice of Water Resources Engineering and Management / Water Resources Management to practicing Engineers and scientists.

Eligibility Requirements

M.Sc / PG Diploma in Water Resources Engineering and Management

  • The Degree of Bachelor of Science of Engineering of the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka or an equivalent degree in a relevant field with a minimum of one (01) year period of appropriate experience, as approved by the Senate, Or
  • At least associate membership of a recognized professional Engineering Institute in a relevant field with a minimum of one (01) year period of appropriate experience, as approved by the Senate

M.Sc. / PG Diploma in Water Resources Management

  • The Degree of Bachelor of Science of Engineering of the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka or an equivalent degree in a relevant field with a minimum of one (01) year period of appropriate experience, as approved by the Senate, Or
  • A Bachelor of Science degree from a recognized university with a minimum of one (01) year period of appropriate experience, as approved by the Senate, or
  • At least Associate membership of a recognized professional Engineering Institute in a relevant field with a minimum of one (01) year period of appropriate experience, as approved by the Senate, Or
  • At least the Graduate membership of a recognized professional Science Institute deemed equivalent to a Bachelor of Science Degree in a relevant field with a minimum of one (01) year period of appropriate experience, as approved by the Senate.

For Both Degree Programme

  • If English is not the medium of instruction in the first degree of the candidate, valid TOEFL (a minimum of 500 points in paper-based, 173 in computer-based, or 61 in internet-based test) or I ELTS (a minimum of 5.0 in Academic Version) scores or equivalent.
  • Selections will be based on the minimum eligibility requirements above, qualifications and experience, and performance at the interview.

  • Integrated Water Resources Management
  • Water Resources Project Planning & Management
  • Water Supply and Sanitation Systems and Water Quality Management
  • Research Methods for Water Resources Engineering Planning and Management
  • Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for Planning and Management

Compulsory modules for Stream A

  • Advanced River and Hydraulics Engineering River and Estuary Hydraulics
  • Advanced Irrigation Water Management for Food and Water Security

Compulsory modules for Stream B

  • Concepts of Irrigation and Irrigation Water Management
  • Coastal and Estuary Ecosystem Management
  • Water Resources Systems and Watershed Management for Planning and Management
  • Fundamentals for Planning and Management of Water Conveyance and Drainage Systems.

Elective modules for both streams A & B

  • Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation Options for Water Management
  • Disaster Risk Assessment, Reduction and Mitigation
  • Service Delivery Assessment Concepts for Water Supply and Irrigation Systems
  • Environmental Assessment of Water and Related Infrastructure Development
  • Advanced Remote Sensing and Global Positioning Systems
  • Advanced GIS for Water Resources Management

Elective modules for stream A

  • Advanced Coastal Engineering and Estuary Management
  • Advanced Water Supply and Sanitation Systems for Engineering Applications
  • Water Resources Systems and Watershed Management for Planning and Management

Elective modules for stream B

  • Advanced Irrigation Water Management for Food and Water Security.

Course Duration

  • M.Sc. Courses: 12 months (full time) or 21 months (part time) and PG Diploma: 12 months (part time)
  • All academic work and research projects will normally be conducted in a three term academic year from Tuesday to Saturday (full time course) or in an equivalent duration from Friday to Saturday (part time course). After the successful completion of the first year with specified examinations and assignments, candidates may opt to obtain the P.G. Diploma. Those who wish to obtain a M.Sc. Degree should complete a research Project and submit a thesis based on the research study during the first year (full time) or second year (part time).

Course Fee

M.Sc. full time / Part time: Rs. 350,000/- PG Diploma, Rs. 250,000/- for overseas applications

M.Sc full time USD 5,000/ – (SAARC) USD 6,000 (other countries)

Other Fees

  • Registration Fee: Rs. 1,000/- per year
  • Examination Fee Rs. 1,000/-
  • Refundable Library Deposit: Rs. 5,000/- (upto two books)

Financial Assistance

South Asia Foundation (SAF) annually offers eight (08) full paid scholarships to full time participants from SAARC countries attending the MSc programms of the UMCSAWM, with the objective of promoting regional cooperation through South Asian Water Management Education. Applications for the scholarships should be made directly to the SAF/India.
