Central Bank decided to stop printing 10 rupee notes; replace by 10 Rupees Coins

Sri Lanka Central Bank decided to stop printing this lower denomination currency replacing it with 10 rupee coins.

Most of these notes are disfigured and the Central Bank is now issuing coins to all banks replacing the old notes, a senior official of the Central Bank’s currency management division said. The CB has placed a massive order to mint a series of 10 rupee coins featuring important land marks of Sri Lanka’s 25 administrative districts.

Sri Lanka army is into Economic Supportive development of Dairy farming

The Sri Lankan army, involved in business and economic activity since the May 2009 end of the conflict, is aiming to be one of the country’s largest milk producers.

As it expands its contribution to GDP growth – not through salaries, wages and expenditure on military hardware but real economic activity, the army has established its own Directorate for Agriculture and Livestock to promote agriculture and dairy industry.

This department is currently negotiating with an investor to import 10,000 cows with the capacity to produce 60 litres of milk per cow per day, from an Australian company.

A comprehensive plan has been crafted to increase milk production at its Kandakadu Agriculture Farm in Welikanda spanning over 11,140 acres and transforming it to become the biggest farm in South Asia. The milk production would be made available to MILCO for distribution.

Amidst the controversy last year, spilling into 2014, of contaminated milk from imported products, a campaign was launched to increase local milk production to reach self-sufficiency, and the army’s effort is in line with the national plan.

Sri Lanka annually requires around 900 million litres of milk but has the capacity to produce only 300 million litres, just 25-30 per cent of the total need. This is despite 30 per cent of the workforce of Sri Lanka being engaged in animal farming,

The milk food import bill costs US$400 million (or more than Rs. 49 billion) a year and the government’s plan is to attain self-sufficiency in milk by 2016. Several initiatives been directed towards this target through government and private sector efforts.

The army’s latest initiative is commensurate with its role of changing the landscape of Colombo and suburban areas and other cities including Kandy as well as entry into the hospitality and tourism sectors with the advantage of cheap labour and skills of security forces personnel. While there has been some criticism of the army’s role in business and allied activity particularly since it provides stiff competition to others which offer more costly services, the military hierarchy has somewhat deflated this criticism through showpiece infrastructure development like the Colombo Racecourse, the Arcade Independence Square, beautifying parks, playgrounds and the creation of walking, cycling and jogging tracks in Colombo and the suburbs.

The Kandakadu farm was taken over by the army from the control of the LTTE and reopened in 2011. The army is in the process of using the whole land area for agriculture, livestock and diary development. So far 300 acres have been cultivated while the dairy section of the farm currently has 200 milk cows.

According to military sources, the army will provide the skilled labour for the planned joint venture project with an Australian company which will set up cool rooms.

Meanwhile in another project to enhance local milk production, the Economic Development Ministry recently signed up with the Export Finance Insurance Corporation ( EFIC) of Australia and the Rabobank, Netherlands to provide funds to import 20,000 cows. Under this, the ministry will import 20,000 cows from Wellard Rural Export Pvt. Ltd, Australia at a cost of nearly $ 74 million (more than Rs. 9.6 billion).

In addition to the Kandakadu farm, the army has farms in Ella- Kantale, Kuttigala, Diyatalawa, Paanaluwa, Habarakada, Ekala, Kandakadu, Udayarkattukulam, Menik Farm, Nachchikuda, Kohilawaguruwatta, Palali and Wellakulam areas totalling 2196 acres.

Those farms grow paddy, corn, vegetables, fruits, coconuts, sugarcane, peanuts, oranges, arecanut, cinnamon, banana, jak, seasonal crops and produce dairy products. In addition, some of those farms carry out animal husbandry, poultry and dairy cattle activity.

Troops of the Sri Lanka Army General Services Corps are actively engaged in these projects island- wide and sell the harvest to the public at reasonable price.

Commercial Bank begins renovation of Sri Pada steps – as CSR Activity

The Commercial Bank has begun work on renovating two sections of the steps to the summit of Sri Pada for the benefit of thousands of pilgrims who make the trek up Sri Lanka’s holy mountain. The Bank’s CSR Trust has allocated substantial funds for the project, which entails repairs to the steps between lamp posts 192 to 212 and 247 to 260, on the stretch leading up to Seetha Gangula.

The work in two phases is due to be completed in December, before the commencement of next Sri Pada worshipping season. Labour for the project is provided by the Civil Defence Force.

This is the second occasion that Commercial Bank has undertaken restoration of the pathway up Sri Pada. Commercial Bank’s Maskeliya Branch has undertaken to coordinate the project, liaising with suppliers to arrange the building materials, and the Civil Defence Force unit attached to Sri Pada.

The Commercial Bank previously funded the reconstruction of the pathway between Seetha Gangula and Thenna in 2008.

Sri Pada is revered as a holy site by several religions and annually thousands of pilgrims climb the steps up this holy mountain to worship. It is of particular significance to Buddhists due to the belief that the foot print of Ix>rd Buddha is imprinted on top of the mountain.

The peak pilgrimage season is in April. Preserving Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage is one of the focus areas of the CSR Trust of Commercial Bank. Two of the main projects it has completed in this sphere are the construction of a Museum at Krivehera and the renovation of the lamp posts donated by the Bank to Dambulla Temple.

Commercial Bank contributes a percentage of its post tax profits annually to its CSR Trust, established in 2004. The Bank defines the overall goal of its CSR policy as ‘to generate measurable and sustainable social dividends for different segments of society, in particular those which require empowerment and enrichment’.

Other initiatives of Commercial Bank’s CSR Trust include donation of IT laboratories to schools, presenting scholarships and laptops to undergraduates, providing English education to rural school children, supporting healthcare projects around the country and supporting facilities for war heroes.

The only Sri Lankan Bank to be listed three years consecutively in the world’s Top 1,000 Bank’s, Commercial Bank operates a network of 235 branches and 590 ATMs in Sri Lanka. Ranked the most valuable private sector brand in the country in 2014, the Bank has won multiple awards as Sri Lanka’s best bank over several years, and was adjudged one of the country’s 10 best corporate citizens by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce in 2013.

Government allows import of high-powered motorbikes

The Government will allow the import of high powered motorcycles -from 450 cc to 1001 cc — upon payment of duty.

The decision by the Cabinet of Ministers overturns objections earlier by the Police that they did not possess such high capacity motorcycles to cope with an influx.

Ministers have decided to lift the restrictions imposed on the import of high powered bikes up to 1001 cc. They can now be imported legally and registered with the Department of Motor Traffic.

Last year the Government granted permission to register motorcycles with high capacity engines only for sports purposes. The approval of the Secretary to the Ministry of Defence was needed for such imports. Prior to that, the import of motorcycles with a capacity higher than 350 cc was banned.

Earlier, the police had expressed concern over granting of permission for high-powered motorcycles as they could be used for criminal activities and they could escape as the police did not have such powerful bikes. However, recently, the Police imported some 230 bikes of 600 cc capacity. But most of them have been distributed in and around Colombo.

Second private medical college in Kandy

Sri Lanka’s second private medical college will be opened in Kandy. Plans have been finalized and construction work will begin soon, said Higher Education Minister S.B. Dissanayake.

The minister said there is a heavy drain on foreign exchange due to a large number of Sri Lankan students seeking higher education abroad. Since the duty of a government is to ensure a supply of education facilities to fit the demand, it had decided to fulfil this need by starting private medical colleges and technological institutions.

He said he had introduced six degree awarding institutions using powers vested in him as this was the latest trend in neighbouring countries such as India and China.

He said new facilities were also being introduced in state universities under this new program.

He said a new Engineering Faculty has been launched at the South Eastern University and a Faculty of Management has been started at the Peradeniya University.

Two new engineering faculties would be started at the Sri Jayewardenepura and Kelaniya Universities and another two medical faculties would be started at the Jaffna and Sabaragamuwa Universities.
