For the first time in Sri Lanka history, the Sri Lanka Railways (SLR) will transport garbage as part of a solid-waste disposal project in which garbage will be collected from Colombo City and the suburbs. The garbage will be disposed at a site in Aruakkalu in Puttalam under a newly formulated Municipal Solid Waste Disposal System.

Government was looking forward this project as environmentally acceptable and economically feasible solid waste management project for some time to dispose the solid waste collected in the Colombo City and the suburbs such as Nugegoda, Kaduwela, Moratuwa, Ratmalana, Mt. Lavinia, Ja-Ela and Kolonnawa.

At present 700 metric tons of solid waste is collected in Colombo each day while 1,200 metric tons are collected from other urbanized local authorities.
