More than 3S0 students who passed the GCE Advanced Level examination 2013 with flying colours will receive scholarships abroad to follow higher studies.
Higher Education Ministry sources said students who performed well at A/L Examinations are granted foreign scholarships annually.
This is the first time our students received such a large number of scholarships. Students who obtained higher Z-scores are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Under the first phase of the scholarship scheme,
Seven scholarships will be granted to the students to follow higher studies in medical and dental sciences in Bangladesh, Applications have been called for the scholarship scheme. Interviews are scheduled to be held in the first week of January.
Meanwhile, 180 scholarships will be offered to students in graduate and doctoral studies in India. Interviews will be held at the end of next month.
Students will also be granted a considerable number of scholarships under the Commonwealth higher education program to study in China, Russia, Japan, Nepal and Cuba.
Scholarship for Srilankan Students in India: for Under Graduate, Post Graduate and Ph.D
The Indian government announced the offer of 180 ICCR scholarships for higher studies in India to pursue undergraduate, Post Graduate and PhD courses. These scholarships are available for study in all the courses except medicine.
Nehru Memorial Scholarship Scheme: Hundred slots are being offered under this scheme covering all the Undergraduate courses (except Medicine) including Engineering, Science, Business, Economics, Commerce, Humanities and Arts.
Maulana Azad Scholarship Scheme: Fifty scholarships for Masters Degree courses including Engineering. Science, Economics, Commerce, Humanities and Arts. However, preference would be given to the fields of Engineering, Science and Agriculture. Medicine including indigenous Medicine courses is not included in this scheme.
Rajiv Gandhi Scholarship Scheme: Twenty five slots for Undergraduate courses in the field of ‘Information Technology’ leading to a B.E or B.Tech Degree.
Commonwealth Scholarship Scheme: Hive slots for Masters and PhD Degrees in all subjects except Medicine.
The Indian government selects meritorious Sri Lankan nationals for award of these scholarships. Selection of candidates is done in consultation with the Sri Lankan Higher Education Ministry to pursue higher studies including research in some of the topmost universities in India.
All scholarships cover full tuition fees for the entire duration of the course, in addition to a monthly sustenance allowance. The scholarship also covers accommodation allowance and an annual grant for books and stationary. Besides, all ICCR scholars in India are provided full healthcare facilities, air fare to the nearest destination in India and an annual grant for educational tours to various parts of the country, apart from several other auxiliary benefits.
The selection of candidates would be done through the Ministry of Higher Education, Sri Lanka.
The Ministry has invited applications from eligible candidates and the application forms can be downloaded from the website of Ministry of Higher Education at www.mohe.gov.lk. The last date for submission of duly filled up application forms for all the above four schemes is January 20, 2014.

The new Automated Library system and Digital Library of the Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL) at Nawala was declared open by Higher Education Minister S.B. Dissanayake recently.
The system supports all library housekeeping functions, including library backed administration, acquisitions, cataloging, circulation, periodical title/ article management .The system is equipped with a powerful search engine to supplement these advanced requirements.
The new system has been designed according to International Library Standards. A salient feature of the new mechanism is that it works as an online public Access Catalogue (OPAC) and as a Digital Library.
The system is interactive so that it is ‘user-powered’. The importance of this system is that this Digital Library can be accessed by public. The Digital Library can be accessed through following URL: http://search.lib.ou.ac.lk.
“The system is customized, implemented and fully maintained by the library staff at no cost. The new system will save millions of rupees which otherwise have gone to the universities abraod to seek relevant facilities,” she said.
Meanwhile, Minister S.B. Dissanayake promised that more new components will be added to the existing facilities at the OUSL to expand the capacity of the institution. He said although the OUSL made good profits, the primary focus of the institution was to supplement the country’s work force by producing skilled professionals in a variety of fields through quality education.
To fulfil this task, he urged the OUSL staff to work with dedication and commitment and added that the government was prepared to provide whatever assistance necessary to expand facilities for both the institution and staff.

BTEC Level 7 Diploma is a postgraduate level qualification which is awarded by Edexcel, UK. It is made up of six modules which comprise a total of 60 credits. It enables progression with advanced standing (exemptions) to Masters in Business Administration Degree (MBA) which can be completed in Sri Lanka.
Necessary arrangements have been made to conduct the above Examination from 09th December, 2013. Admission cards indicating the examination dates and centres have been posted to the relevant candidates to their personal addresses.
