The strategic Urban Development Project centered round the historic Kandy City, would be launched in August, this year. Initially US$ 100 Million would be spent on this project handled with the active contribution of the Defence and Urban Development Ministry.
This was revealed at a special meeting held at the Kandy Kachcheri. It was also revealed that three sub urban main roads would be developed under this project. This would include the Getambe-Katugastota road via Gohagoda, Katugastota – Madawala road and Dharmasoka Mawatha.
Historical significance of the City of Kandy and its environmental protect ion will be given pride of place under this project while emphasis would also be given on attracting tourists and ensuring the safety of the pedestrians and drivers.
The Moratuwa University has already completed initial research work on the project, while land acquisition work for road development is already in progress.
The land of Bogambara Prision located 8.5 Acres is proposed to construct a hotel, a leisure area, mini cinema, shopping complex and a stage for cultural and entertainment activities by the Urban Development Authority (UDA).
The proposals still on a planning stage and the construction work is expected to begin in the first quarter of next year and would be completed in two years at a cost of Rs.300 million which is funded by the UDA.

The Bogambara Prison, which had been constructed by the British rulers in Kandy, should be preserved as an archaeological site, the Chairman of the Judicial Services Commission. Sisira Ratnayake said.
The chairman, who visited this prison, also took time to witness the uniquely constructed gallows that were situated inside the former prison and commented that by giving school children an opportunity to witness the scary nature of the gallows it could prevent them from getting involved in unlawful acts in the future.
